    Solo Travel in Ireland

Travelling solo with Wilderness Ireland doesn’t mean travelling on your own – instead, it means joining a small group trip of like-minded travellers who are also enthusiastic about exploring the beautiful landscapes and fascinating history, culture, and heritage of the Emerald Isle.

We welcome solo travellers on all our small-group adventures – in fact, many of our guests choose to travel solo. Whether you wish to hike along rugged Wild Atlantic Way coastlines, cycle through rugged roads in Donegal, or delve into Ireland’s rich history and heritage, our trips offer the freedom and support to do it all on your own terms.

Every small group trip is led by an experienced guide, so you don’t need to worry about accommodation, transfers, directions, or even where to find the perfect spot for a brew. Along the way, you’ll benefit from their local knowledge, gaining deeper insight into the landscapes, historic sites, and charming towns you encounter. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be welcomed into a friendly group of fellow travellers, and with all the logistics taken care of, you’re free to enjoy every moment. Whether you’re a seasoned solo adventurer or considering your first independent trip, we make solo travel easy, rewarding, and wonderfully stress-free.

Going Solo on a Group Trip — Is It for Me?

Solo travel doesn’t mean being on your own. When you join a Wilderness Ireland small-group trip, you enjoy the best of both worlds — the joy of travelling as an individual alongside the companionship and connection of a welcoming, like-minded group.

We offer a wide range of trips throughout Ireland, each designed with different interests, activity levels, and travel styles in mind. From gentle walks and cultural discoveries to wilder hikes and incredible bike routes, there’s something for every kind of solo traveller. Whether you’re seeking quiet moments in nature, authentic cultural connection, or the exhilaration of reaching a mountain summit, you’re sure to find your perfect trip (or two!) for you.

    Best Tours for Solo Travel

Nearly all of our group trips are perfectly suited to solo adventurers — but if you’re looking for ideas to get started, here are a few of our favourites.

For solo hiking holidays, the Dingle Way is a top choice. One of Ireland’s most iconic long distance trails, it offers dramatic scenery, coastal views, and warm village hospitality. With all the logistics covered — from route planning to luggage transfers — you’re free to relax and enjoy the journey.

Island hopping is another popular option for solo travellers. Choose between exploring the beautiful islands of the West Coast or the charming island communities of Cork and Kerry. Without worrying about the fuss of ferry timings or where to stay, you can focus on discovering the character and charm of these unique places. Check out our range of hiking tours for more inspiration.

If Irish traditions and local stories are what draw you in, our Culture & Heritage tours offer a rich and engaging way to connect with Ireland’s past and present.

Joining a cycling tour is also a brilliant way to explore as an independent traveller. Whether you’re riding through the wilds of Donegal or taking it at a more leisurely pace on an E-bike in Kerry, our small-group biking tours combine stunning routes with expert support. Browse our range of cycling and E-bike tours to find the right fit for you.

Whatever activity you enjoy most, you’ll find a solo-friendly tour to match — simply follow your interests, and we’ll take care of the rest.

    Solo Travel FAQs

I'm a solo traveller, do I have to pay a single supplement? Read More

No problem at all. There is no supplement for solo travellers as long as you are happy to share a room with someone of the same gender. If you’d prefer to have your own room there will be a charge. This charge will be noted on both your itinerary and on the individual trip page, or feel free to contact us to confirm price when checking single room availability.

What do the room types mean? Read More

Single – A room for one person, available for an additional supplement and usually allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Double – A room for two people with one bed.

Twin – A room for two people with two separate beds.

Can I book a single room? Read More

Single rooms are offered on most of our trips but these are limited so are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. It’s no problem to book a single room as long as there is one available. Please not that single rooms do incur a single supplement. Find out more about the price for a single room in the trip dossier. After making your online booking, please contact our Sales Team in order to book your single room.

Will there be other solo travellers on my trip? Read More

It’s impossible to know in advance what the make-up of a particular trip will be but in general, the majority of people that join our group trips are solo travellers. This means that there most likely will be a few solo travellers on each trip. If you have questions about who you will be travelling with then give us a call and we can give you a quick overview.

I'm a solo traveller, can I book a self guided trip? Read More

We don’t offer self guided trips for solo travellers. However, our small group trips are very popular for those travelling independently. If you would like to join one, don’t hesitate to browse all our adventures here.

Can I join a solo holiday last minute? Read More

Everyone’s definition of “last minute” varies slightly, but we do offer places on selected trips close to departure. Solo travellers are often well suited to last-minute bookings—especially on lodge-based tours like our retreats, where rooms are available right up until the trip departs.

If you’re considering a last-minute solo holiday, we recommend contacting our friendly team to check availability. If there’s space on the trip, you’ll likely share a room with another traveller of the same gender, though single rooms may still be available on some departures.

Of course, female solo travellers are welcome on every tour – but for those keen to travel in the company of other like-minded women, you might like to book your spot on our female-only departures. Learn more here.

You’ll only ever share a room with fellow travellers of the same gender, and most trips have the option to pay a single supplement, in the case that one is available. Discuss your options with your friendly sales consultant for more info.

    Our holidays reviewed
    in your own words

My previous two trips with Wilderness were in Scotland. They were fantastic trips but this one was better. There is something very special about the Irish and their country. There was a gentleman named John on one of our ferry boats that came up to us as a group and became an instant friend and source of information. This happens a lot in Ireland. We were able to milk goats and enjoy ice cream from the goats and the family farmer gave us the run of his house to store our backpacks and use his facilities. So many special moments on this trip that you can’t put a price tag on! This was my 14 th trip to Europe in my 68 years for various vacations and this trip stands high and above all of the others!
