I was familiar with Wilderness Scotland so easily navigated your site. I am an information seeker so I do like the blogs and background info. I found the info on places to stay or eat good feedback as well.

Trip Comments

Gosh, I have been such an ambassador for you - before and especially after this trip. Each time I am amazed with the dedication of the guides to insure I am having a fabulous time with out hovering. My guides were Mark Brown and David Lawless, each bringing their own unique awesomeness to the trip. David was just so very kind and eager to share both his knowledge of history and the area as well as his talents as a musician. I appreciated both of their transparency. Mark proved he was not only a very strong rider and organizer but a great travel guide as well. He gave me great suggestions for my solo adventure through Derry, Ballycastle and Belfast. They seemed to be everywhere at once while we were riding and venturing. Each added a very personal touch - again, David with his knowledge and easy manner and when Mark took us to hit the hurling stick - oh dear, I have tears in my eyes now at the specialness of it all.

Accommodation & Food

The Highland Hotel - excellent service and delicious breakfast. I left an entire kit at the hotel and my fabulous guides coordinated with the hotel for delivery to the next spot. Just wow. Shandon -what a lovely spot with an incredible view! Enjoyed the laundry service and the spa. Little things but nice midway. Rathmullen House - what a treat! An Irish manor - so beautiful with lovely grounds and a beach. And the bar and the dinners/food here were excellent. I really appreciated the locations chosen for our lunches - iconic spots with great food. Also, very nice of the guides to coordinate dinner for those who may have wished to join. One note - I stayed at The Green in Dublin - you asked about places to add to your lists - really a great place to land after a long flight - delicious buffet for breakfast and excellent service. Also, I enjoyed the Europa in Belfast - literally around the corner from the train station.

Your Guide

Please reference previous remarks but I will add some more. The routes were really great - loved Glenveigh - enjoyed they added an additional castle at the request of one of the guests. Enjoyed the Kilclooney Dolmen. Another beautiful touch - as I pulled in after the big climb of Glengesh Pass David was there at the top playing his low whistle. Cant give enough thumbs up emojis for that.

The Bottom Line

Haha - I know we are supposed to live "in the moment" but I was not the only one on this trip trying to figure out which Wilderness Ireland trip I would be doing next.

We feel incredibly grateful to our guides David and Mark for the wonderful week of memories, beautiful landscapes and incredible hospitality provided during the execution of a well curated and fantastic trip through Wilderness Ireland. We would recommend it to anyone looking for not just a sightseeing and biking experience. But especially to people on search of a unique memories full of connection, insight into the people and places we visited and genuine hospitality and care provided. Top notch once in a lifetime experience and highly recommended.

The team was engaged and usually quick to respond. The team appeared to struggle locating restaurants offering multiple vegetarian options - so I wasn’t confident that the vegetarian dishes would be very good - but the meals were good. Looking back - after the trip, some of the descriptions of the activities and hotels were a little vague or misaligned from the experience we encountered - some good and some less so. The description of the hawk walk undersold the activity. The number of birds and actually holding and having one land on each of us exceeded our expectations. The hotel in Kenmare was a handsome old structure but it didn't have air conditioning and wasn’t as modern/updated as I would have expected - I would have expected the lack of AC to be disclosed (and if it were, I would have asked for a different hotel). The Killarney Park and the Westbury were both wonderful - the Killarney park had just undergone a renovation - which I don’t recall seeing in the description. I would have liked to know that landing on Skellig Michael was unpredictable and there was a high risk of missing that. Fortunately, we were able to land on the island. My daughter got soaked on the return trip from the Skelligs - we didn’t have the right gear. The ferry crew included a pair of dogs - which we loved - but may not have been great for non-dog lovers. I didn’t realize it - but the last 3 days - each being on the water - was too much for us. The lake boat also inclided a dog. I expected the story teller to be more historical - less fictonal/less limerick-like; we expected to hear stories about Irish lore and history. The week before the trip, I would have liked to receive a message confirming our reservations, updating any change policies, and possibly setting up a brief introductory video call with our guide.

Trip Comments

The driver from the airport was especially engaging and a wonderful introduction. The Killarney Park hotel - my wife said probably the best hotel she has ever stayed at. Anne from Beara peninsula was very engaging and informative - even though she was not the original guide planned. Bridget and Liam from farm tour (last minute change) were great and the drive to/from was very scenic. The Skelligs were incredible. And Linda - our guide - was a great pairing - she customized the itinerary for us further and made us feel welcomed and comfortable. Although - not part of the itinerary that you prepared for us - may I recommend the “Wolfhound Experience” - a walking tour with Wayne and his Irish Wolfhounds in a park in Ireland that my wife found - it was a nice way for animal lovers to leash walk these gentle giants and get acclimated to new time zone.

The Bottom Line

All of us referred to the trip as “magical” at several points along our journey. For the most part, the experiences were unforgettable (in a good way) and the trip was probably our best family vacation ever!

The Wilderness Ireland Donegal Cliffs to Coast Cycling trip exceeded our expectations. The scenery was spectacular; the rides exhilarating; the guides experienced, passionate and knowledgeable; the food was outstanding. This is a great way to see and experience Ireland.
