How Do I Choose the Right Bike?

When booking a cycling trip, one of the first questions often asked is: Should I choose an E-bike or a road bike? There’s no straight answer. Rather, the answer depends on your comfort level, fitness, and what kind of experience you’d like from your biking trip in Ireland.

    Cycling in Ireland

Ireland’s roads are made for adventure – winding lanes, rolling hills, and the occasional sharp descent. While this can mean a lot of fun and excitement, it also means that, though a small country, cycling can still be challenging.

Road surfaces vary from smooth tarmac to rougher country roads. Wild hedgerows line the lanes, sharp bends can impact visibility, and two-lane roads are often only wide enough for a single car.

Taking the road less travelled might mean grass growing down the middle of the country road, but it also means that there’s nearly always something incredible to see around the bend – a ruined castle, an ancient 5,000-year-old tomb, or a sweeping coastal view.

The one element many cycling visitors underestimate? The wind. Strong Atlantic breezes can add an extra challenge to full days in the saddle.

At Wilderness Ireland, bike rental is included in our bike tours. But which tour to choose, and which type of bike? Read on to find out what will work best for you.

    Why Choose an E-bike?

E-bikes outside a colourful pub in West Cork.

Our Trek Allant+ 6 E-bikes offer comfortable flat handlebars, upright riding, and a powerful electric assist with 5 modes. The electric assist helps to smooth out climbs and headwinds, while still keeping you active.

We have a number of E-bike tours – on these trips, an E-bike is automatically included. As they are designed with E-bikes ion mind, unfortunately, road bikes won’t work on these tours.

Learn more about the pros and cons of E-bikes below.

    Why Choose a Road Bike?

Cycling along the Wild Atlantic Way.

Our Trek Domane AL 5 road bikes are light, agile, and built for speed. With drop bars or flats and the option of flt or clip-in pedals, road bikes are ideal for cyclists who want a traditional cycling experience.

Choosing the Right Bike for Your Trip

The good news is that on Wilderness Ireland group guided and self guided cycling tours, you can choose either a road bike or an E-bike – whichever suits your style best. Do note, though, that on dedicated E-bike tours, only E-bikes are available, as they are explicitly designed to suit this kind of bike.

There will always be a support van on every type of cycling tour. This allows any participant to take a breather, or even head back early. Your guide will offer regular snacks, water, and storytelling along the way. Even self guided tours have a support driver who is ready to offer assistance and snacks.

Whichever bike option you choose, you’ll enjoy Ireland’s stunning landscapes, amazing flora and fauna, winding roads, and rich cultural heritage – accompanied by a bike ideally suited to your adventure.
