From the historic cobbled streets of Galway to the bustling city square of Belfast and everywhere in between, these Christmas markets capture the spirit of the season, calling sightseers to experience the charm of a truly festive celebration. Visiting one of these magical markets is a must for tourists exploring Ireland in December.

Discover the best Christmas markets in Ireland that you won’t want to miss this holiday season.

    Cork Christmas Market

Cork City comes alive at Christmastime with numerous events, activities, and experiences, not to mention the main event: the Christmas market located in the Marina. The Marina Market also operates throughout the year, but in winter, it evolves into a charming Christmas village. Artisan goods, from ceramics and leather items to beautifully crafted wooden toys and seasonal ornaments, will be aplenty. Tasty food options will also be available, with stalls serving everything from gourmet doughnuts to piping hot chocolate and traditional Irish stews.

Cork is also the perfect base to check out the southwest of Ireland. Look at our travel guides for an idea of what’s nearby.

    Galway Christmas Market

Located in the heart of Galway at Eyre Square, this Christmas market is a beautiful blend of traditional Irish culture and European-style stalls that draws thousands of visitors annually.

The market boasts over 50 wooden chalets, each offering something unique, from handmade jewellery to local artisan crafts. Stroll through stalls selling festive decorations, delicious German sausages, mulled wine, and traditional Irish treats. There’s even a large beer tent with live music, perfect for getting into the Christmas spirit. Children will love the carousel, Santa’s train, and the 32-metre-high Big Wheel, which offers stunning views over the city.

    Waterford Christmas Market

Winterval in Waterford is Ireland’s largest Christmas festival, transforming the medieval city into a festive dreamland. The market is spread around the city, but the heart of it is in the Waterford Cultural Quarter. The traditional Christmas market is brimming with handcrafted gifts, homemade food, and local crafts. Visitors can enjoy hot mulled cider, yummy treats, and live performances.

Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city, founded by Vikings over a thousand years ago. Every step through this ancient city will lead you to a fascinating story. It also has several interesting museums, including Ireland’s first-ever Wake Museum.

    Belfast Christmas Market

Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is known for its rich past, cultural landmarks, and friendly atmosphere. Repeatedly named in Lonely Planet’s top regions, Belfast is increasingly becoming known as an appealing place to explore.

In December, the city transforms into a winter wonderland, with the Christmas market as its centrepiece. Set against the backdrop of Belfast City Hall, it is a picturesque joyful activity to get in the holiday spirit. Shop for locally produced goods, European delicacies, and, of course, a beer tent that plays live music and serves hot drinks to keep you warm as you shop.

Belfast offers not only a beautiful Christmas market but is also steeped in history and serves as a gateway to the rest of Northern Ireland. To discover more things to do while in Belfast, check out our travel guides below.
