    Wellness in the Wild

Why Nature is Good for You

In today’s world, there is an ever-increasing need to be ‘switched on’—whether you’re scrolling on your phone, responding to instant messages, emails, and phone calls at work, or binge-watching a TV series until the small hours of the night… Sound familiar?

The concept of wellness has always been popular, but never has it been more important than in the current world of technological advancements and endless demands for your attention. In response to this “always switched on” notion, people around the globe are seeking tranquillity and a place where rules and responsibilities can fall away, even just for a brief moment. And there’s no better place to achieve this zen than in nature.

    Mindfulness in Nature

Mindfulness is a trendy term at the moment. But what does being mindful actually mean? In short, mindfulness is the practice of being aware of the present moment, paying attention to the here and now. Spending time in nature encourages this practice, as you’re more inclined to truly experience your surroundings when you’re somewhere that captures your attention.

Imagine yourself switching off and tuning into ancient wisdom while exploring the plethora of historical heritage sites throughout rural Ireland. Or soaking up the sun and breathing in the salty sea air on a sunrise hike, overlooking the Wild Atlantic Way from a scenic vantage point.

While immersed in a mindful moment in nature, you free yourself of past worries and future concerns, as they float away to make space for immersive moments in the present. According to an article in Translational Psychiatry, sunlight increases serotonin levels, which in turn enhances mood. Naturally, your breath slows down, bringing about relaxation, reducing stress levels, lowering blood pressure and easing mental fatigue, as stated by the International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology.

    Locations Best For Wellness

    Flora & Fauna

We are biologically programmed to seek out green spaces—places complete with trees, plants and wildlife. Biophilia—literally meaning ‘love of life’—is the term used to define this innate connection between humans and nature.

Exposure to natural sounds has a profound effect on wellness. Ratcliffe, E., & Korpela, K. M. (2021) report that exposure to sounds such as birdsong, water, and wind can have a positive, restorative impact on wellness. Their study found that compared to traffic or street noises, natural sounds such as birdsong or ocean waves were far more effective in calming the sympathetic nervous system, reducing stress by lowering the heart rate and slowing down breathing.

The dawn chorus is an incredible phenomenon in which large numbers of birds gather together in song. Unofficially it occurs in early May, with the official international Dawn Chorus Day taking place anually on the first Sunday in May. There are multiple locations around Ireland where this spectacular occurrence can be experienced.

    Slow Adventures

Another symptom of this “go, go, go” world is the belief that exercise must be intense to be beneficial. But don’t believe the hype!

Slow adventures, sometimes called gentle travel, such as walking, hiking, cycling or canoeing, offer many benefits. As well as enabling you to take in your immediate surroundings more easily, and according to a study by ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal, low-impact exercise outdoors can lower blood pressure and heart rate, enhance vitamin D levels, improve eyesight, and promote general happiness.

Additionally, as stated in this article, the rush of fresh air and natural light regulates your circadian rhythm, ensuring you have a restful sleep at your cosy accommodation after a wonderful day out in the wild.

    Doing a Digital Detox

These days, when faced with a moment’s silence, most of us will reach for our phones to fill that gap as soon as conveniently possible. And for what reason – the fear of missing out? Avoiding your thoughts? Boredom? Habit?

There is power in disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with yourself and your loved ones. That’s easier said than done, but a digital detox in the natural world around you offers perspective, space, and beauty. A study by Atchley, R. A., Strayer, D. L., & Atchley, P. (2012) supports the significant cognitive advantages that stepping away from electronic devices and immersing in nature can bring, such as increasing creativity and improving problem-solving abilities by 50%.

Social media sells itself as a way to stay connected with others. But there is no better way to improve communication and strengthen interpersonal relationships than to experience the outdoors with your nearest and dearest. With more opportunities for sustainable small group travel, there is always the potential to make new connections.
