    Visit Skellig Michael in September

Perhaps you’re Star Wars fan paying homage, a history buff looking for Irish history, or a bird-watcher exploring one of the largest colonies gannets in the world. Skellig Michael has it all.

The Skellig Islands are two jagged rock pinnacles rising above battering Atlantic waves. Today a UNESCO site, 7th-century monks sought this desolate place to live, write and pray in strange but beautiful stone beehive huts.

To visit the ancient monks’ dwellings, you’ll climb 618 ancient stone steps, and though the climb is steep, the views are worth it! Discover bird colonies and explore an other-worldly Star Wars (2015 & 2017 movies) filming location!

But when to visit? It’s a tough call. The Skellig Islands lay 11 km offshore and Irish weather is famously unpredictable. Visit Skellig Michael in September for fewer tourists and a quieter island.
