Gregans Castle Hotel is a luxury, eco and gourmet retreat, located in the heart of the wild Burren landscapes of County Clare. The quaint, countryside Georgian manor constructed in 1750 is named after the ruins of the nearby 15th-century tower-house of the same name. Welcoming guests since the 1940s, Gregans Castle Hotel exudes quintessential 18th-century charm, lovingly-attended gardens and spectacular views that stretch across the Burren hills to Galway Bay.

Inside, you can expect roaring fires and striking decor ranging from modern art to antique furniture. The house has long been a source of inspiration. Former guests include fantasy fiction giant J.R.R Tolkien, Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney and abstract artist Sean Scully. Tolkien was even said to have been influenced by the sounds and senses of the Burren while writing The Lord of the Rings.

Today, Gregans Castle Hotel offers warm Irish hospitality, stylish accommodation, outstanding service and exceptional fine dining in the award-winning restaurant.

    Local Experiences

    Guided Hiking & Cycling

The exposed-limestone Burren landscapes are some of Ireland’s most fascinating. Join our expert guides to explore the wild Burren hills on foot or by bike. Plan your visit for spring or early summer to witness the Burren explode in a carpet of brilliant wildflowers, one of Europe’s most diverse floral landscapes. For cyclists, the quiet country lanes are ideal for cycling – must-sees include whizzing down the dramatic Corkscrew Hill, a stone’s throw from the hotel. Bring your camera – you’ll need it!

The Cliffs of Moher Hike or Boat Trip

Standing at 250m, the Cliffs of Moher are some of the most dramatic cliffs in Europe. The area is home to many different species of wildlife including birds, dolphins and the occasional whale. For the full experience of Ireland’s mighty cliffs, join a guide to walk the whole cliff-side path, drinking in the stunning views expanding out to the Aran Islands and the horizon. Or view the cliffs from a different angle – hop on a boat that allows you to look up at the Cliffs of Moher from water level. Guests might like to combine their boat trip with a visit to the Aran Islands.

    The Aran Islands Excursion

The three Aran Islands are located off the coast of the Burren and are known for their unique culture and traditional way of life – islanders still speak Irish Gaelic as their first language. We recommend a visit to Inis Oírr, the smallest of the islands where you will get a real sense of island life while exploring millennia of history by foot, bike or horse and carriage.

    Tea at Father Ted’s House

It’s a little-known fact that the iconic Father Ted TV series was filmed in the Burren, where you will find the fictional Parochial House of Craggy Island. For fans of the series or simply those curious about this cultural phenomenon, afternoon tea at Father Ted’s house is a delightful activity. Guests will also get a guided tour of the farm with its rich heritage and longstanding local traditions.
