Day 1 – Historic Galway Read Less

      Day 1

      Historic Galway

From the vibrant city of Galway, we head straight to Connemara’s wild regions. Leave civilisation behind as we climb a narrow pathway to the top of Diamond Hill, Connemara’s most iconic hilltop. From the summit, enjoy stunning views from the mountains to the Atlantic. To one side, the silhouette of Connemara’s hills and mountains beckon, rugged and wild. On the other side, the sea glistens in the distance. Look just below, and you can see out of the turrets and towers of Kylemore Abbey, a gothic-style manor set amongst the slopes. In the evening, it’s time for dinner and a pint in a traditional pub – with a bit of traditional Irish music if you’re lucky.

      Meals Included: Lunch and Dinner

      Day 2

      Omey Island

After breakfast, set out to explore the unique tidal island of Omey. Reached by crossing a wide sandy beach, this tiny island is rich in history – home to ancient holy wells and buried churches from the Middle Ages. Like many parts of rural Ireland, Omey was devastated by the Great Famine in the 19th century, and the ruins of abandoned settlements can still be seen on the island today. Enjoy exploring this beautiful and evocative place with your guide before returning to the mainland this afternoon.

Found at the mouth of Galway Bay, the Aran Islands are three distinctive isles that are a haven of traditional Irish language, culture and music. After breakfast, catch a small ferry to the largest of the three, Inís Mór, to explore its stunning natural landscapes, ancient stone forts, and rich culture by E-bike. Visit the breathtaking fortress at Dun Aonghusa, perched dramatically on a cliff edge, before venturing further inland to discover some of the island’s hidden gems. This evening, rosy-cheeked and relaxed, enjoy a delicious dinner.

Wind your way along the shores of Killary Fjord, past rocky outcrops of sheep-shorn grass and soak in the wonderful, far-reaching views. Along the way, look for signs of aquaculture – oysters, mussels and other shellfish – which are still the bread and butter of Connemara communities today. This afternoon, visit a working sheep farm and meet a local farmer and his flock. Learn more about the day-to-day of this traditional way of life, connecting more fully with the landscape and its inhabitants. Relax at your new accommodation in the cheerful town of Westport.
