I’ve always been most at home when in the outdoors, be it biking, kayaking or surfing. This is why I gravitated towards studying outdoor education and why becoming a guide seemed such a natural fit. I love nothing more than loading my van with gear and heading out to explore with like-minded people.

Away from guiding, I work with young offenders. I am also a trained Yoga instructor in a Yoga style called Vinyasa Flow with Green Lotus Yoga. I feel very fortunate to guide people through some of Ireland’s most majestic landscapes and share some of my favourite places with them.

Not a lot of People Know This

Due to rapidly depleting funds, I spent my last term of college living out of my van. It happened to be one of the coldest winters on record. On the bright side, the library had more visits than I had ever envisioned!

I’ve worked as an outdoor guide since 2005 in numerous locations along the West coast of Ireland, be it guiding visitors to Ireland down into caves, hiking the hills and mountains of the Wild Atlantic Way, navigating around islands in a sea kayak or meandering through the beautiful Irish countryside by bike. I’m very fortunate that my job is to introduce visitors to sports and locations that I love!

I’ve always had itchy feet and love to travel myself. When I left school at 18, I packed my rucksack and headed to South America for a year – and definitely caught the travel bug en route! Still to this day packing for a trip brings unbridled joy to my life, I love the butterflies in the stomach before setting off on any adventure with mates into new territories. My biggest adventure to date has been sea kayaking around Ireland – it was an amazing way to experience the beauty of the Emerald Isle in an entirely new way! I know I’m perhaps biased in saying this, but after travelling the world, I truly believe that the hospitality the people of Ireland give to visitors is second to none.

I grew up in the Midlands of Ireland which is a relatively flat region, so I quickly gravitated to the West coast where the adventure of the hills and coastline is on your doorstep. At present, I live on a little island off the mainland in the Burren region in County Clare. It’s an amazing part of Ireland due to its rugged beauty and only a stone’s throw away from Connemara in Co. Galway. It’s a fantastic part of the country for music, seafood and socialising!

I have lived in Galway for the last 16 years and this is definitely home for me. Right on the Atlantic with the mountains of Connemara, the rugged backcountry of Mayo and the wild Burren landscapes in Co. Clare are all only a short drive away. It’s a fantastic part of the country for scenery, seafood and socialising!

So, I could go on forever about how much we loved our guides Rory (sic) and Pearse. They were genuinely nice guys were charismatic and caring personalities who truly cared that we had a great experience. When they found out that my wife's birthday fell on the trip, they planned and organized a surprise champagne toast on the beach and bought an circulated a birthday card. They were funny and engaging and worked so well together. They were knowledgeable, prepared, and resourceful, and, as such, were able to identity solutions to unanticipated problems. They were worked really hard in the physical sense, porting luggage, riding hard, driving, fixing bikes, etc. We all particularly appreciated how they went out the way to bring a personal touch to the trip and bring us off the beaten path to share with us interesting aspects of the local culture. We loved these guys!

Pearce and Ruairi were an ideal team for us. They were ready to guide us on an outstanding bike trip through rain, wind and the spectacular beauty of Ireland countryside, but also elucidate Irish history and culture. They were indefatigable! We wanted to know about every aspect of politics, religion and health care policy and they stood up cheerfully and intelligently to it all. And we had a blast biking the country roads, enjoying the space and our own pace to just plain appreciate nature in Ireland. We can’t imagine a better trip.

This was the best aspect by far of the trip! Ruairi Leddy and Pearse O'Toole were extraordinary in every way! We only wish every trip we took could be guided by Ruairi and Pearse. They were fantastic individually and worked so well as a team. Knowledgeable, joyful, positive, helpful, attentive...completely focused on ensuring we all as a group and as individuals had the best trip possible. They are AMAZING!!!!! we are so grateful for their engagement and support to make our week so wonderful.

I can’t find words to say how super Pearse and Ruari were. Knowledgeable, attentive and most of all fun guys to lead our pack - suffice it to say that I’d go anywhere in the world they were leading a trip.

Our guide Rouhry (spelling) was the final and most significant part of my never to forget trip With Wilderness Ireland. He knew the local history & it’s context to Ireland as a whole, priceless. His humor and good nature brought our group together in friendship and comradery. He was awesome. Tell him thank you for me.

Our guide was amazing. He was a last minute substitute for our original guide who was injured and I can't imagine he would have been better than Ruairi. He was so knowledgeable and overall a ball to travel with. In addition to being a last minute sub, he was (through no fault of his own) thrown some serious curveballs and handled them with grace and humor. He really made the trip what it was and I'm so glad the trip was led by him.
