Self Drive Tours: What to Expect

    Ireland by Road

There’s something idyllic about exploring Ireland by road. A winding coastal route, a canopied woodland road, a high pass looping over the hills or a meandering lane rolling through emerald green pastures and purple-clad bogland – travelling through Ireland by car opens a plethora of opportunities.

A slow-paced road trip provides you with plenty of options to discover, explore and uncover. Enjoy a spontaneous stop at a hidden beach, dropping into a lively village pub, admiring a little-known ancient ruin, getting an unexpected recommendation from a local that turns into the highlight of your trip.

A self drive tour offers exactly that: the freedom of independent travel, paired with the reassurance of expert planning. It means travel on your terms – with just the right amount of guidance along the way.

So, what can you expect from a Wilderness Ireland self drive tour? Keep reading to find out, or navigate the table off contents in the sidebar.

What to Expect on a Self Drive Tour

At its heart, a self drive tour is about balance.

You’ll follow a thoughtfully designed itinerary that takes you through Ireland’s most remarkable regions, be that the Wild Atlantic Way, the Causeway Coast, or the Ancient East, while still having the space to shape each day as you go.

    So what can you expect?

    • A weeklong curated route through one of Ireland’s most stunning regions
    • A selection of the very best drives, restaurants, and hidden corners
    • Handpicked accommodation each night
    • A mix of planned experiences, guided and free time
    • Insider recommendations that bring each place to life
    • It’s independent travel, but without the need to plan it all yourself.

Will I Have a Guide on a Self Drive Tour?

    Yes… and no.

Unlike a fully guided trip, you won’t have a guide travelling with you every day. Instead, your journey is peppered with expert-led experiences.

Throughout your trip, you’ll meet a variety of local guides, from sea kayakers to historians, farmer, to foraging experts, who will offer you a deeper connection to the places you’re visiting.

On a typical week-long trip, you can expect several guided activities woven into your itinerary, with self guided days in between.

The result? A richer experience augmented by local expertise, without sacrificing your independence.

What Kinds of Activities Are Included?

Self drive tours are wonderfully varied, where no two days feel the same.

Curious to know what you might encounter each day on an Irish self drive itinerary? A few experiences include:

    • Hiking coastal trails, lush woodlands or national parks
    • Kayaking through quiet inlets or along rugged shores
    • Pedalling along greenways or quiet laneways to immerse yourself in the region
    • Visiting local farms, distilleries, and artisans to learn local crafts
    • Exploring ancient sites, castles, monuments, and villages
    • Experiencing traditional moments like Irish music, crafting, and more
    • Tasting the local food and drink of Ireland

    Beyond the Itinerary

There’s also space for slower moments, such as wandering a quaint harbour town, discovering a tucked-away café, or tasting a freshly-pulled pint of Guinness in a cosy pub.

A road trip through Ireland isn’t just about spending your day driving in your rental car, seeing the countryside flash by from a window or taking a few roadside photos. A Wilderness Ireland self drive tour is about experiencing the destination, immersing yourself in the traditions and culture, learning new skills and stories, and connecting with people and land.

Our self drive tours get you out of the car and into the landscapes and villages. They are about walking barefoot along the beach, running your hands along stones erected by Neolithic people 5,000 years ago, sharing a cup of tea and a natter with a cheerful local family, meeting a farmer and his sheep in a pasture tended by the same family for generations, or happening upon a group of musicians gearing up for tonight’s trad music session.

Who Are Self Drive Tours Best For?

    Enjoying a boat tour.

Self drive tours suit a wide range of travellers, but they’re especially ideal for:

    • Couples looking for a romantic, flexible adventure
    • Mixed-generation families who want freedom with built-in structure and a variety of activities to suit different age groups
    • Groups of friends travelling together and craving a supported but still independent “road trip experience”
    • Independent traveller groups who still value expert planning, logistics, advice, and support

They’re also perfect if you like the idea of discovering a destination at your own pace, but don’t want to spend hours planning routes, accommodation, and logistics. We lean on our own knowledge and passion for Ireland, building routes, experiences, activities, and recommendations that showcase the best of each region. Do note that for reasons of safety, all self drive trips must have a minimum of two travellers joining the tour.

Not sure which itinerary to pick? Or which daily experiences are right for you? Get in touch with us, and we’ll help match you with the best tour for you.

What If I Don’t Want to Drive?

That’s completely understandable. In Ireland, we drive on the left, our roads can be narrow and winding, and most of the exceptional experiences require driving down back roads, and not all of our visitors are comfortable with that.

If you’d prefer not to drive, a fully guided or private tour might be a better fit. These options allow you to relax and enjoy the scenery while someone else takes care of the road. We have small group guided tours led by experienced guides.

If you like the idea of travelling just with your own group, why not choose the Make it Private option? Select your preferred group itinerary, and work with our sales team to change that into a private tour for you and your group.

Self drive tours in Ireland are designed for those who enjoy being behind the wheel, but there are always alternatives if driving is outside your comfort zone.
