The gorgeous Georgian houses that make up the Merrion were originally built in the 1760s by Lord Monck for the wealthy Irish merchants and nobility for their stays in town. Just two doors down from Lord Monck lived the Earl of Mornington, whose house served as the birthplace of Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington. Later the houses became administrative offices, where Irish author Flann O’Brien (At Swim-Two-Birds, The Third Policeman) once worked.
