What to Expect on a Self-Guided Cycling Tour

At its core, self guided cycling tours are independent travel, made easy.

We plan your itinerary, share your pre-organised route, book your accommodation, organise luggage transfers, and provide detailed navigation. You simply follow the route each day and enjoy the journey.

There’s no fixed group, no set pace, and no guide setting the schedule. Instead, you have the freedom to shape each day around how you feel — while knowing that the logistics have been carefully arranged in advance.

Not sure what to expect from a self guided bike tour? Read our guide below.

What Will My Days Look Like?

Bike southwest Ireland Wild Atlantic Way Dingle

    Cycling in Dingle.

Most days follow a relaxed and predictable rhythm.

You’ll start with breakfast at your accommodation, then set off on your planned route. Using the route files provided and Garmin GPS head units mounted on your bike, enjoy the freedom to pedal at your own pace.

Along the way, there’s plenty of opportunity to stop — whether for coffee, a scenic viewpoint, a village lunch, or simply to take a break. Our team will provide you with plenty of recommendations to make the most of each day.

Routes are designed to be enjoyable rather than rushed, so you’re not just cycling from A to B; you’re experiencing the landscape, culture and communities as you go.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at your next accommodation, where your luggage will already be waiting.

Will I Be Cycling Alone or With a Group?

You’ll be cycling with your own group, not with other travellers.

Even though there are set start dates, these are not group departures like those on our small group tours. You won’t be cycling as part of a larger group or expected to keep pace with others.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with friends or your own larger group, your day on the bike is entirely your own.

Choose which self guided cycling tour calls to you, and book on the date that works best for you and your group. Your experience will be private to your group only.

What Kind of Bike Will I Use?

Trek bikes on a quay along the coast, with boats in the water

    Trek bikes.

We work with Trek to provide high-quality bikes that are suited to Ireland’s roads and terrain. These include:

    • Road bikes for control and speed
    • E-bikes (available on most trips, but enquire when booking), which can make longer distances or hills more manageable

All bikes are professionally maintained and fitted for you at the start of your trip. E-bike places can be limited on some trips, so if you prefer to use an E-bike, ensure you enquire early.

E-bikes can be a game-changer for a group of mixed abilities. They can also provide a level of comfort and assurance, or simply allow you to focus less on cycling and more on exploration. Note that E-bike rental may incur an additional supplement.

Can I bring my own bike? Read More

Yes – some guests may prefer to travel with their own. If you plan to bring your own bike, please get in touch so we can advise if your planned departure supports your bike. For anyone planning to cycle with their own bike, we can advise on logistics and ensure everything works smoothly with your itinerary. Please note that not every itinerary or departure will support certain bike types.

Can I Join a Self-Guided Cycling Trip on My Own?

No, there is a minimum of two travellers on our self guided tours, including self guided cycling itineraries. This is for safety reasons, as we avoid anyone cycling on the road alone.

However, we have a number of small group bike tours, which are perfect for solo travellers. We welcome any solo travellers on our guided bike tours. Meet like-minded people, enjoy the benefits of two guides travelling with you, as well as additional on-the-road support – all while cycling at your own pace.

Who Are Self Guided Cycling Tours Best For?

Cyclists group standing at the bottom of a climb on a backdrop of azure blue sea

Explore the stunning Wild Atlantic Way coastlines by bike alongside your own cycling companions.

Self guided cycling trips tend to suit travellers who:

    • Prefer independence over group travel
    • Have some cycling experience and are comfortable navigating with the aid of a bike computer/GPS
    • Want structure and support, but not a fixed itinerary
    • Are travelling as a couple, with friends, or with a larger group
    • Value good planning, but also want control over their day

Many guests are experienced travellers who enjoy being active and like the idea of exploring at their own pace.

While our small group tours have a max of 8 travellers, self guided cycling tours have set dates that allow up to 12 travellers, making these tours ideal for larger groups – for example, cycling groups or families.

Why Choose a Self-Guided Cycling Tour?

For many, choosing a self guided cycling tour is about balance.

You get the freedom of independent travel, combined with the reassurance that the key details are taken care of. There’s no need to plan routes, book accommodation, or move luggage — but you still have full control over how each day unfolds.

Deciding to travel on a self guided bike tour is a practical, cost-effective way to explore Ireland by bike, without sacrificing comfort or support.
