    Mini Bio

I’ve been playing outside in the mountains all over Ireland for the past 30 years and I’m not stopping anytime soon! Working as a mountain guide is the cherry on top – life is certainly looking after me. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to trek through high mountains all over the world.

Working and being outdoors in Ireland is what I truly love. I am passionate about sharing my love of Ireland as well as its great adventures, people and culture with others.

My hobby is ‘Adventure Racing’ which I do badly but I thoroughly enjoy. I adore being alive and enjoying places and experiences to the max!

    Favourite Place to Play

Really, anywhere outdoors with friends! But to highlight a few favourites, I think that the Nephin Beg hills in West Mayo are the perfect place to get out and hike, as they have panoramic views but are still completely wild.

I love the dramatic headlands of Howth Head, as they are just north of Dublin but feel so far away from the city. If I’m looking for a challenge, I head down to Lugnaquilla mountain in the beautiful Co Wicklow.

The wild Mweelrea mountain in Co. Mayo, just north of Killary Fjord, is another favourite. And finally, the ancient Celtic site of the Hill of Tara is an amazing place to re-energise.

Not a lot of People Know This

I had a pet pig who was a great soccer player – what an excellent defender!

What Fellow Travellers Say About Paul

I can't say enough about Paul's excellence as a guide. He knew how to move with each one of us and his knowledge of Ireland is incredible. Please refer to my previous comments for more information.

The downside of the trip was that our time was so packed that we never got to saturate in the nature and feel its spirit, beauty and history from a sensorial standpoint. Translated: I craved time to just sit in a place and synch into the sounds and textures, etc., around me, without eating lunch or listening to stories. The constant cerebral experience of all that Paul has to share took away from the sensorial experience, which I was so wanting. And, I appreciate what Paul had to share.

Also, there was almost no time to leisurely walk around the towns, shop and talk with storeowners, unless you were willing to give up a day hiking. I would have liked to not choose. I chose nature.

This pace would keep me from doing another trip, unless I knew there would be more spaciousness.

Paul guided us on our recent trip to the West Atlantic Islands. Paul is a very competent and generous guide who was always switched on to our needs and anticipating the varied requests of the different hikers. He achieved a fine balance in being very attentive to safety and also providing a relaxed and very informative narrative during our trip. Paul is a very passionate sharer of Irish history and his story telling was integral to our enjoyment of the trip.We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the walk and experienced places that we would not have got to had we been traveling on our own. Many thanks Paul for your generosity and energy across our time together.

He took us to many special spots that helped us connect the dots to Ireland through pre history to present. He is a friendly, positive guy and there were times it seemed he knew everyone in Ireland.

Guided trips are, for me, the absolute best. Paul can talk and walk (or drive and talk) at the same time so we were never away for a reliable source of information, and it didn't need to be just about the trip. He could (and did) describe living conditions and some history of religions in the area over the years - and anything else we could think up to ask. I never got the impression he was hedging away from answering a question fully.
You can see more of my thoughts about Paul early in this feedback form. He also was able to pivot when conditions warranted, like finding us just the right place to stretch our legs for a bit during a longish drive - in a "crafted" forest with a walk along a quiet stream in the woods. Much better than one person driving while watching out for traffic and critters on the road while the other person has their head in a guidebook or map.
Sheilagh Larkin gets a plug here. I know she's not a guide, but she was an integral member of our clutch of women, sharing her knowledge and humor and yet another peek into WI culture. She is a delightful addition to your cast of providers. She and Paul seemed to get along famously.

Paul Quinn did a remarkable job as our tour guide. He made all the hikes enriching and interesting with the bits of trivia that he made us aware of. Paul is considerate of the group and constantly ensures that everyone is comfortable and safe.
He is reliable and a great conversationist too. I feel like I have gained a great experience and some knowledge from this trip, all thanks to our guide and the carefully crafted itinerary!

I mentioned a lot in my previous answer, so please share that with Paul as well. Paul made the trip what it was - an amazing adventure exploring beautiful Ireland on bike, horse, boat, foot, and van. Wow! We so appreciated the top-notch level of service from Paul. Welcoming us with the Halloween Van, the always replenished goodie box below the seats, the fascinating level of knowledge of the area and of Ireland as a whole, guiding us through the gorgeous landscapes of Ireland, and being so friendly and kind to us throughout the trip. He was excellent with the kids who at times weren't feeling up to the challenge - helping to motivate them to finish the long cycle ride for example. He brought us to delicious restaurants which after a long day of activities was always welcomed. We thank Paul so much for creating the most memorable, fun trip to Ireland for us.

Can't say enough about how fabulous Paul was for our particular group. We were a mature (lol) group with a wide range of hiking capabilities. No one was ever not looked after from the fastest to the slowest of us. Paul would talk, laugh, educate, encourage and hike alongside each and everyone of us at various times along every route. He would always ensure everyone was okay and it was obvious he took his job seriously about trying to make our experience the best he could. I'm not even sure what would ruffle him as he even took a car accident in stride and just kept trucking right along with us. All I can say is if I ever get the chance to do another hike with you, it will be my pleasure any time, any where. Thank you very much.
