    Mini Bio

A volunteer with Sligo-Leitrim Mountain Rescue for over 30 years and with a PhD in history, I am continuously inspired by the 5,000-year-old Irish cultural landscape and how it speaks to us today. My travels have taken me all over Europe, from Alpine peaks to wild crossings of Icelandic rivers to the snow-covered back country of arctic Norway and Sweden.

However, I am always drawn back to the magical and legend-filled countryside of Sligo, my homeplace, where hills and mythology are part of the experience of growing up. I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm for Irish placenames and the rich landscape of the west coast.

    Favourite Place to Play

Well, the Sligo uplands obviously! But I have a great love for the mountains of Mayo, and the wonderful remoteness of the Nephin Beg range.

Not a lot of People Know This

I once shared a stage with a very young Michael Flatley while in an Irish dancing competition for the three-hand reel. His group of dancers obviously won!!

What Fellow Travellers Say About Fiona

Fiona Gallagher was comprehensively knowledgeable about local history, providing informative and helpful context for all the excursions. She capably and cheerfully navigated the ever changing weather, the needs of a diverse group, and the unexpected vagaries of dining establishments, traffic, and parking.

Historical knowledge and love of Ireland was exceptional. Dealt well with some difficult customers
Plans had to be changed and this was well managed. We were late to get food one day but this was managed well. We always had plenty!

Our guide Fiona possessed superior knowledge of the natural and historical areas of Ireland which we walked through. Fiona dealt with several difficult issues with a calm attitude. Fiona was very approachable and open to discuss any idea or issue from the walkers.
