Trip Details

This biking and yoga escape in northwest Ireland winds through some of the quietest back-roads and most laid-back parts of Ireland – a perfect duo to immerse mind and body.

From our start in the coastal surfing village of Strandhill to the beautiful valley of Glenade, your biking and yoga journey will lead you through a hidden Ireland full of culture, tradition and majestic scenery.

We have found yoga to be the perfect partner for a day in the saddle. It’s a great way to get your body and mind in the mood for a cruise in the wilderness. So if you like to feel especially connected to the places we visit on this biking and yoga escape we would very much like to welcome you to some of the peaceful backroads of north west Ireland.

Note: Days 1 to 6 of this trip include a gentle yoga session tailored for cyclists to help you get the most out of your journey. Beginner cyclists and yogis are very welcome!

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Coolera Peninsula

Meet your guide at Sligo Train Station and transfer to a surfing village with a seriously chilled-out vibe – the perfect place to start our biking and yoga escape. After stretching our muscles in our first yoga class, we’ll head off to explore the magical rolling hills of the Coolera Peninsula. Once the centre of an ancient civilisation, Sligo is littered with ancient megalithic monuments, from the enormous cairn on top of Knocknarea Mountain to the passage tombs at Carrowmore. (L, D)

Distance: 19km/12miles, 2hrs.

Day 2 – Ox Mountains

We take to the saddle, heading south into the Ox Mountains. This remote and wild mountain range offers gentle climbs with stunning descents on its northern slopes. We’ll visit quaint villages and meandering rivers before heading into the lush patchwork fields of Sligo, a quiet haven of country life, before finishing up with an oceanfront pint and a bit of yoga. (B, L)

Day 3 – Lough Gill Loop

Today’s route is a favourite of local cyclists, taking us around the shores of Lough Gill, made famous by WB Yeats’ poem ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree.’ For Yeats, this small wooded island paradise of Innisfree provided an idyllic wilderness retreat. Clinging to the edge of Lough Gill is a 15th-century castle, offering a fascinating look at local history. Today’s route is mostly rolling countryside with lovely lakeside panoramas. (B, L)

Day 4 – Rosses Point

Starting off on the picturesque Rosses Point, we’ll following a relaxing loop around the rocky peninsula. We’ll bike past the historic Lissadell House, once home to a local hero, as well as the tranquil beaches perfect for a stroll. Exploring nameless headlands and rocky outcrops of Yeats Country, we’ll have the chance to visit bike past the famous poet’s final resting place under the shadow of Ben Bulben mountain. (B, L)

Distance: 43km/26miles, 3.5hrs.

Day 5 – The Two Valleys

One of the most picturesque routes of Sligo, we bike through a glaciated valley formed in the last ice age. Like something out of a fairytale, the valley contains some of Ireland’s most beautiful yet hidden scenery. Biking along winding country roads far from the world, we’ll drink in the brilliant emeralds and romantic remoteness of this magical place. Emerging from the paradisal valley, we’ll pedel under the shadow of the impressive and iconic mountain of Ben Bulben.

Distance: 45km/28miles, 4hrs.

Day 6 – Cycling Along the Darty Mountains to Donegal Beach

A winding, coastal route with a spectacular finish to our week of biking and yoga, we roll along rugged coasts and surf towns, crossing county lanes to the busy market town of Ballyshannon. Arriving at our final accommodation on the cliffs overlooking Donegal Bay, we’ll enjoy our final views of the churning Atlantic waves. With the Blue Flag Rossnowlagh Beach stretching out into the distance, this is the perfect place to stretch out muscles in a final yoga class before we raise a toast. Day 7 – Depart

We’ll have a relaxed morning and time for a stroll on the lovely Blue Flag Rossnowlagh Beach before it’s time to say goodbye to the northwest and transfer back to Sligo Train Station. (B)

This trip features accommodations chosen for their excellent location, service and comfort. Light, airy and spacious, the accommodations on this trip reflect the laid-back, relaxing attitude of the trip – perfect for a cycling and yoga escape to the wilds of the Irish northwest! All accommodations provide breakfast.

We do not charge single person supplements to people booking on their own. However, you will be expected to share a room with another person of the same sex. If you specifically require a single room you will have to pay the single supplement charge of €250 but this is subject to availability.

You will be met by your Wilderness Ireland guide at Sligo Railway Station at 12.00 pm on Day 1 of your trip. We will drop you off at Sligo Train Station Station by 1 pm on the last day of the trip.

Difficulty Grades Explained

Green Grades 1-3

The road cycling trips that we offer are graded to take into account a combination of the general level of fitness required and the number of miles cover as well as the daily ascent and estimated saddle time.

Our green graded trips would usually include shorter days, with less ascents and more stops along the way.

The green graded trips have been designed to be accessible so that they appeal both to active people who enjoy road cycling but prefer flatter terrain and to people new to cycle touring but want a new way to experience the country.

On most days the itinerary is a relaxed combination of saddle time, scenic lunch stops and time to explore the natural and cultural history.

As with all of our road cycling trips, we have a guide riding with you on the road but also have a dedicated support vehicle, so if you need a break at any time, you can jump in the minivan and give your legs a rest.

Distances typically range from 25-35 miles each day with possibly one or two slightly longer days between key stages of the itinerary. The terrain is generally flat with one or two short climbs. Before joining this trip, the questions you should be asking yourself are:

Are you generally active and enjoy riding a road or hybrid bike?

Are you up for a challenge, cycling each day in a small group, and having a lot of fun?
