I have loved Ireland’s wild places since I was first introduced to them in the scouts as a teenager and I have been exploring and enjoying the Irish wilderness ever since then. My first experience of guiding or leading others in the outdoors was as a scout leader where I realised that I enjoyed introducing others to the environment that I knew and loved as much as I enjoyed exploring it myself. Since then, I have been leading, guiding and instructing in the great Irish outdoors with youth groups, the Irish Defence Forces and as a wilderness guide.

    Favourite Place to Play

The Burren in Clare or the 12 Pins mountain range in Connemara. I love them both, but if hard pressed to choose, I think Connemara would be the winner.

    Biggest Adventure Read More

I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to have travelled throughout Europe both for work and on my own adventures. I’ve have had the opportunity to visit the Middle East and West Africa through work. My favourite travel destination is always a new one! The more places I visit, the more itchy my feet get to keep travelling!

What Fellow Travellers Say About Liam

Liam could not have been more accommodating and attentive to our needs and wants on the entire trip.

Liam absolutely made this trip for us. I cannot overstate what an asset he is to Wilderness Ireland. He strikes the best balance of professional and personal. His broad knowledge and interests of all things Ireland and globally added so much to our experience. This man will make sure you safely arrive at the top of a mountain whilst learning about the cultural and natural history of the area and then set up a tea service in the wind and the rain at the top - what more could you possibly ask for? When one of our planned hiking days was thwarted by strong winds, Liam quickly adapted plans to make sure we still had a grand day out exploring cultural and historical sites instead. Having worked in customer service myself for many years, I can say that the level of personal service he provides is truly remarkable in the industry. We can't say enough great things about Liam, we will absolutely be booking another trip with Liam in the future should we be so lucky to return!

Liam is a treasure. He offered up history and geology and even explained how the farms operate. He always had answers to our questions. He kept the conversation going and joined in on our hijinks. The hikes were interesting and he kept a good pace. He even made tea and coffee to go with our lunch stops.

What really made the week top-notch was our trip leader, Liam Fahey. Knowledgeable, friendly, polite, unflappable, funny, well-versed in Irish history and lore, and possessed of the enviable skill of following a schedule without any outward sign of watching the clock. An excellent interpreter of Yeats, but not so great at carrying a tune ;-)...The man is a treasure for an organization like yours.

Liam is the best! Even on a hillside cliff with 50 mile an hour gusts of wind, I knew he would take care of us. Or when we climbed up and down that rocky steep hill to the fiord in the rain, he was there to help and I felt confident I could do it. And I was really proud of myself! I highly recommend him and felt fortunate to have him as our guide. Plus: he's really funny! I appreciated his sense of humor. (7 3/4 points in Irish football? He had me going for a moment!)

Liam as guide is quite remarkable. His ability to get us from point A to point B on time, unscathed, happy, well fed and supplied appropriately for each hike is basic. On top of that he is a sponge for information, especially history and archaeology, which he relates as a humerus and confident storyteller. No cold, dry facts here. He kept us constantly intrigued about what we might learn next, and feeling like there was time enough only to scratch the tip of the iceberg of each story. His love of Ireland shines through always.
He is also able to punt – to adapt to changing circumstances regarding hiker abilities, options for food or transport or changing terrain and time available.
On a rainy afternoon he responded to a hiker's request by finding us Joyce Country Wool where Carina Coyne has her studio. She takes in raw fleece from neighboring farmers and turns them into lovely yarns and knitted items. Another learning opportunity.
And Liam is a good driver. I always felt safe riding in the van.

Guide Liam was beyond fantastic and really made the trip that much more special. He made sure that we were all sorted at the beginning and end of each day, he made the group tea/ coffee on top of mountains, and taught us all so much about Ireland and Irish history and culture. I can’t say enough in Liam’s favor. It must have been a tricky trip to coordinate, but it went off flawlessly. In the meantime, he was able to rise high above the organizational challenges and make the trip special. His sense of humor and patience are boundless. His storytelling (Finn McCool’s doings especially) and knowledge of Irish/world politics and culture combined to provide a depth to the experience that was a treasure. Oh, and let me say that Liam has inspired me to put more energy into reading poetry. His recitations of Heaney and Yeats were moving. The trip was such a welcome relief from the last many months, but Liam created a lifetime event for us at a moment where much less would still have been a joy. I can’t express my appreciation enough.
