Me in 3: Fun | Professional | Longshanks
Favourite Place to play: The Burren in Clare or the 12 Pins mountain range in Connemara. I love them both, but if hard pressed to choose, I think Connemara would be the winner.
Not a lot of people know this about me: People think I’m over 6 feet tall but I’m actually only 5 feet 16 inches ;-)
Mini Bio: I have loved Ireland’s wild places since I was first introduced to them in the scouts as a teenager and I have been exploring and enjoying the Irish wilderness ever since then. My first experience of guiding or leading others in the outdoors was as a scout leader where I realised that I enjoyed introducing others to the environment that I knew and loved as much as I enjoyed exploring it myself. Since then, I have been leading, guiding and instructing in the great Irish outdoors with youth groups, the Irish Defence Forces and as a wilderness guide.
- Mountain Leader
- SPA (rock-climbing Instructor)
- Confidence Training Instructor
- Level 6 Outdoor Education
I have been working and playing in the outdoors all my adult life including 23 years in the Irish Army and recently as an outdoor activity instructor and hiking / hill-walking guide. Getting to do what I love for a living is a great gift that I am very thankful for!
Travel & Biggest Adventures
I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to have travelled throughout Europe both for work and on my own adventures. I’ve have had the opportunity to visit the Middle East and West Africa through work. My favourite travel is destination is always a new one! The more places I visit, the more itchy my feet get to keep travelling!
I have always loved hiking/hillwalking ever since I was a child. More recently, I’ve also fallen in love with more technical activities like rock climbing, alpine climbing and cycling. Perhaps it’s because I’m from an island, but I’ve always been drawn to water sports and activities – snorkelling and kayaking are particular favourites!
Hobbies & Interests
Being a guide, of course I love exploring new places – and even better, I love finding new corners of old places! History has always fascinated me, especially making the connections between history, landscape and people past and present. And recently, I’ve picked a new hobby (perhaps unusual in Ireland!) – salsa dancing!
Connemara and West Mayo – Mayo’s Achill Island is a very special place. Also hiking in the Burren is amazing just because it’s so different to anywhere else! It’s impossible to pick a favourite when the whole west coast is so fantastic.
