I am and always have been for as long as I can remember, mad for being outdoors. I think the world would be a better place if everyone walked, ran, paddled, biked, or just went outdoors more regularly. I take my four young children outside to do these things and camp for multiple nights each year. I feel very lucky to guide people through the beautiful landscapes we have in Ireland. Mostly I love to help convey a sense of the rich and varied history/culture we Irish are famous for, either through song or story, early or late.

Not a lot of People Know This

I daydream about being a world-class Javelin thrower and making the qualifying standard for the next Olympics, despite never having actually held a Javelin!

I spent 3 years working as an outdoor education instructor, teaching a range of adventure activities to everyone from 8 to 80. I then went on to spend 5 years as a coordinator of an inner-city based adventure project working with disadvantaged teens. For the past several years, I’ve been working as a hiking and outdoors guide, exploring the wonders of Ireland with overseas clients. What a dream job!

Post college, I spent two full summers mountaineering in the Alps and living the dream! Every night, I slept under the stars and spent my days rock and ice climbing – all on a shoestring budget!

I’ve also taken a couple of 10 day trips to the beautiful Pyrenees mountains on the border of Spain and France for some very special white water river fun. And then there was the time that I spent the winter wandering the mountains of the Cairngorms and Nevis mountain range in Scotland, where I ended up as Acting Warden in the famous Alex McIntyre mountaineering hut!

What Fellow Travellers Say About Donncha

Donncha was clearly very knowledgeable and worked to teach us a little more about Ireland, its history, and its people. He handled technical issues with the bikes well -- helping me manage a broken spoke on day one while also adjusting my handlebars when I needed it.

Andrew is immensely likeable, enthusiastic, and supportive to the riders. His focus on our experience showed in things like shuttling back and forth between riders to make sure we all made it through any tricky bits of navigation like day three on the way out of Killarney and getting reservations set up each night for dinner.

When another person had a sore knee that kept her from riding for a couple of days, each made her feel welcome in the van when they were driving. When we arrived (soaked) at Killarney on day two before all of the rooms were ready, Donncha was able to help the hotel swap our rooms around so we could start getting cleaned up and dried out some of the riders were still on the road.

I cannot speak too highly of Duncha. His love of the area shone through and his passion for the landscape and folklore was obvious. But what I shall always remember is his spontaneous renditions of Irish ballads and tales. Such a talent. I guess our small group made leading quite full-on - he had no time to himself all week but never showed signs of irritation. He stretched us with regard to some of the walks but this just made the days fulfilling. He really made the holiday the success it was.

He was fun and careful and made sure everyone had a good time. Knew the area completely so changing plans was no problem. Especially loved the “rest stops" that always included a story or a song! (Having Louise there too was an added attraction!)

Our guide was knowledgeable, accommodating, took good care of us, and gave us much insight into Ireland. His singing was an additional bonus. He had us all joining in and we loved it. It added a lot to my feeling for and admiration for "Irish soul".
Donnech(spelling?) was delightful, upbeat, always helpful, and a good driver on the narrow roads.

Donncha was outstanding. A keen listener (there seemed to be an endless supply of dark chocolate - thank you!), his love for the countryside and fun personality were inspiring. We particularly appreciated his recommendations to beat the weather or avoid long drives in order to maximize our time outside, even if it meant deviating from the planned itinerary.
